Location Description
At the crossroads of cultures, a place of cohabitation of various civilizations, Granada is a unique mixture. The city is in South-East Andalucía, at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, and at the confluence of the Genil, Darro and Beiro Rivers. The actual city is the fruit of two civilizations: the Arab realm which reigned until the end of the reconquest of 1492 and the occidental. Granada is filled with these two cultures whose combination gave origin to “Mudéjar” Art.
The Alhambra is the great architectural work of the city, and the most beautiful illustration of her mix of cultures. It was constructed in 1238 and was used as a palace for the Arab sovereigns. The building was so beautiful that the Catholic Kings decided to conserve and utilize the building as their royal Palace. Since then, the only modifications were made by Carlos the Fifth to construct his palace, the “Cuarto del Emperor” and the “Peinador del la Reina.” From the top of the Alhambra, you can view the entire city and maybe even see the snowcapped tips of the massive mountains surrounding the city.
The albaicín, the oldest neighborhood of Granada, is situated in front of the Alhambra. Its unique appearance of white houses and narrow streets has changed little from the Arab occupation, giving it the feeling from another era.
The Bib-Rambla is one of the most famous plazas in Granada, and here you will find some of the best restaurants in the city. Following this plaza starts a bazaar in the narrow streets of the neighborhood. If you follow them, you will find the Cathedral.
The Cathedral of Granada is a mix of architectural styles: it was conceived in 1523 as a Gothic Cathedral, but after 1528, the construction continued with the Renaissance style. The building was finished in 1724 and its chapel is considered the most beautiful in all of Spain.
If you are enjoying your trip and decide to stay in Andalucía a bit longer, you will discover the most original and exotic province in Spain. There is a wide range of different landscapes: from the plains to the tips of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the arid hills to the beaches of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
The interesting and curious sights for tourists are limitless, the most famous being the Giralda and the Alcázar in Sevilla. You will discover cities like Córdoba, Cádiz, Ronda or Huelva and you will pass through Andalucía’s small towns filled with white houses. Finally, if the temperature gets too warm, you can go for a swim at the beaches of the celebrated Costa del Sol.
