Alicante is the second most important city of the Valencian Community (Spain), with a population of 322,431 inhabitants. Located on the Mediterranean coast (Costa Blanca), it is the capital of the province of Alicante and the region of the Alacantí. Its metropolitan area has more than 430,000 inhabitants with the neighbouring localities of San Vicente of the Raspeig, San Juan de Alicante, Muchamiel and Campello. In addition, the metropolitan area of Alicante-Elche has about 725,000 inhabitants. It is primarily a tourist city with major attractions being the old city centre, the sports harbour, the castle and its fortifications. The old city (casco Antiguo) is beautiful but relatively small. It lies jammed between the Rambla, a boulevard that lies on the former town wall, and the hill where the castle can be found. Most of the monuments are to be found in the old district of Santa Cruz. This is a part of the city with narrow streets and stairs built against the slopes of the Monte Benacantil. Picturesque streets are surrounded by white maisonettes dotted abundantly with flowers and decorated with ceramics. You can also find the picturesque Hermitage of the Holy Cross (Ermita Santa Cruz) in this district, among many other points of interest.
