Rome Derby

This Sunday the 31st, Series A, which is Italy’s first division football league, will kick off. Amongst the favourites expected to carry the trophy home are as always: Inter Milan, Milan, Juventus and Rome. But if there’s one certain derby in Rome that is bound to get temperatures rising, it’s Lazio v Rome.

These two teams coming head to head has always caused undisputable controversy and unfortunately, the main cause of worry is the level of violence and danger that the derby brings. This is only one of the worries as emotions fly high during the weeks surrounding the game. Once, the derby was suspended when extremist Lazio supporters invaded the stadium to talk with the referees and the players to explain that a police car had ran over a child. The match was suspended only to find that no such thing had happened. The famous Di Canio raising his arm to the crowd in Nazi style is a typical example of how tempers can fray during the match.

The ‘Il Campionato’ starts on Friday the 31st of August, but it won’t be until the 16th of November and then again on April the 11th that the two teams come head to head. At this point, both teams will be well into the spirit of things and will be strongly motivated by their captains Tommassi Rocchi (Lazio) and Francesco Totti (Rome) which could mean further trouble.

So good luck to both teams and from Oh Trip, we hope both sides learn to behave themselves. :-?

Skate-Park Rome

Rome is far from being the skating capital of Europe but it does however have an ever growing ‘underground’ scene and is home to a superb skate-park which will be welcoming the forthcoming Skateboarding World Cup.

The park is the largest in Rome and is called ‘The Spot’; this is where all the ‘skater kids’ of Rome park their wheels. Entrance to the park is 3.50 and you can skate till midnight during the summer, (8pm during the winter) as the park is lit up. You can also buy monthly passes for 35euros and yearly passes for 175euros.

The park itself is very well designed; modern with plenty of obstacles. There’s some very street décor with graffiti art sprayed on each wall and the beach is less than a 5 minute skate away.

The only hiccup with the park is that it may very well require too much technique for beginners as it’s based on the professional ‘X-Games’…but hey, you can always start on the euro bump, the mini-ramp and the pyramid box. In addition, it’s a rare thing to have a skating park to your self for a whole 1 or 2 hours, without seeing a single soul; so take all the time you want and make all the mistakes you need! ;-)
