Hoofdstad van Portugal sinds 1255, met ongeveer 1 miljoen inwoners een monumentale, moderne en kosmopolitische stad. Het is de meest belangrijke stad van het land en is gelegen aan de monding van de grootste rivier van Portugal. In de karakterestieke wijken van Lissabon, Alfama, Madragona en Barrio Alto vindt u een levendig nachtleven, wwarbij een bezoek aan een van de cafe's, waar de fado gezongen wordt (een droevig, Portugees volkslied). Bezienswaardig is het klooster "Los Jeronimos" (16e eeuw in Renaissance- en Manuelino stijl), het cultureelcentrum "Belem" met zijn toren en het slot "Sao Jorge (17e eeuw) van waaruit u een mooi uizicht heeft over de stad en de rivier de Taag. Verder vindt er nog de Kathedraal uit de 12e eeuw, het park "Nacoes" en de tentoonstelling van de oceaan (onderdeel van de Expo '98), de brug "Vasco da Gama" en de "25e april". Zeer bijzondere haven.
