Location Description
Porto Cristo belongs to the municipality of Manacor, and is situated on the east coast of Majorca. There are two theories on the origin of the name of this village, both very curious. The first theory says that in 1260 DC, during the Christian conquest of the Island, a fishermen's ship that was taking a cross was cleaned in these waters. Another theory says that two oxen that were taking Christ's icon to the city of Palma de Majorca, stopped in this village and did not want to move nevermore, so the icon remained there and gave name to this village.
The characteristic of Porto Cristo is its natural port that together with the nearby Porto Colom is one of the biggest along the east coast of Majorca. In the nights Porto Christ is a very calm and quiet location. Tourist looking for more attraction also in nightlife can spend the night partying in the nearby Cala Millor. Nevertheless during the day this place can manage to be full of people, with all the buses that take tourists to the nearby caves of Drac and Hams, undoubtedly the biggest tourist attractions of Majorca. They are spectacular caves with the biggest underground lake in Europe.
They are not the biggest caves but undoubtedly they are the most impressive. A guided tour lasts generally about an hour.
And if you want to see something more, make a trip to the most important urban centre: Manacor. This city has a long tradition in quality furniture manufaction and is an also a very important center for the pearl industry. It also offers great sport facilities, cultural attractions and shopping facilities. The surrounding country side is characterized by an incredible diversity of landscape, in these zones the rural tourism is also very developed.
