Location Description
Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Balearic Islands, is found on the south west of the Island of Mallorca. Although at first glance it appears to be a small enough town, Palma de Mallorca offers all the advantages and comforts of a large urban centre that is full of history and elegance, and, beginning in the 1960s and continuing on, the huge phenomenon of global tourism changed the landscape of fortune in Palma de Mallorca , converting the city into a highly important centre of tourism.
Arriving by boat, the visitor is welcomed by the majestic, beautifully preserved and maintained Gothic cathedral that is the crown jewel of the historical old town centre of Palma de Mallorca.
Many different peoples have walked the streets of Palma de Mallorca through the centuries of the towns´ long history; Talayotics, Romans, Muslims... Palma is an example of a town with a unique mix of cultures.
In Palma de Mallorca there are many museums to be found, for example; el Museu d´Art Contemporani and la Fundaciò Pilar i Joan Mirò. Also worth a visit are the Palace of the Almudaina – a cuitadella-residence built by Arab sovereigns, and la Lonja – a market dating from the 16th Century that is still very active to this day. And more; the Arab baths, the Oleza Palace, Pueblo Español, el Rastrillo.
The many invasions suffered by Mallorca through the centuries have had a great effect on the cuisine, creating one with wide-ranging and varied tastes. Not to be missed are the menus of fish and locally harvested vegetables, and actually finding a place to go for a meal will not be a problem with there being more than 1´200 restaurants in the city! And of course, for those with a more heightened interest in the gastronomic culture, we recommend a vist to the “Cellars”, authentic old warehouses where you can sample the delights of the local cuisine.
