Les Cases d’Alcanar is a small town on the Costa Dorada, located 200km from Barcelona, 100km from Reus airport in Tarragona and 20 km from the town of Amposta. The fisherman’s town is right beside the sea and has fantastic views of the Sierra del Montsià. There’s a new promenade been built right along the sea and the town is know for its cuisine, local holidays, the sun, seafood and the hospitality of its locals.

Location Description
The town of Les Cases D´Alcanar is on the southern tip of the Costa Dorada, 200km from Barcelona. Its´name comes from the arab word meaning "shop" but its´Cristian foundations date back to the 12th Century. At that time, the King Jaume I, gave the town its´independence within the jurisdictional district of Tortosa. Today, inspite of the increase in tourism in the surrounding area, the town´s fishing area has maintained its traditional form and you will still find the typical white washed houses which give the town a clean, bright feel to it. The principal activity of Alcanar is agriculture, oranges, mandrines and cictric fruits. The area is one of the biggest agricultural producers in Catalunya. Visitors to the area tend to enjoy the mediterranean cuisine the area is famous for its´ seafood: shrimps and prawns may be found in abundance in the waters around the Coumbretes Islands. Besides the 14km of beach that the town enjoys, the area has also something to offer history lovers, nearby you can visit the ruins of the Roman town of La Moleta del Remei. The ruins were declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1979 and opened to the public, the town had been inhabited by the Romans between VII Century B.C.E the II Century C.E. The municipal of Alcanar has three annual fiestas: 15th May: The fiesta of Sant Isidro, Patron saint of agriculture, 15th August: Fiesta de Les Cases. In the middle of summer the town celebrates its fiesta with street parties and dancing at night, October: Fiesta de San Miguel, a religious and cultural festival where they adorn a statue of the Virgen Mary. Every five years the statue of the Virgen is brought down from an isolated Monestery and is adorned, this festival is called the Festes Quinquennals.
