L'Ametlla de Mar is a village at the Costa Dorada which is also known as La Cala. The bays of Ametlla and further in the north of Sant Jordi always used to be shelter places for the fishers and seemen. In Sant Jordi oyu can still find the rest of a castle built in the 17th centuary which used to be the headquarter of the Sant Jordi d'Alfama order the only strict catalan order of the history. Fishing is still the mayor income of the population of Ametlla, and Ametlla has one of the most important fishing fleet of Catalunia regarding the quantaty of exportation and the volume of fishing. The port of Ametlla de Mar is the only port which dedicates itself to fishing only. So don't miss out a nice dinner with the freshest fish available. The 16 km coast side at the Costa Dorada that forms Ametlla de Mar is one of the most beautiful and untouched nature along the Costa Dorada and the mediterranean coast. There are impressive rocky beaches mixed with fine sandy beaches. However ,you will also find some beaches with gravels. Ametlla de Mar offers you a lot of different things to do. Go diving and experience the great variety of fauna. Besides you can do walking tours or enjoy a beach volleyball game at the beach. typical dishes of Ametlla de Mar is a rice dish with sea fruits called L'Arrossejat, La Fideuda a Paella that is made with a type of pasta instead of rice and many more (Fishsoup - El Suquet de Peix Calero, Fish dish - La Zarzula de Pescado y Marisco, dish with bread, pepper and fish - El Romesco, etc.). Every first week of February there is the big Fiesta of the Candles with impressing processions.
