Location Description

As the capital of Spain and the first city in the country, Madrid has managed to preserve her glorious past while continuing to look towards the future. Located in the heart of Spain and just 50km from the summit of the Guadarrama Mountain Range. Madrid is a city of art with 73 museums, the most famous being the Prado, which houses a magnificent collection of paintings from the 14th century until the beginning of the 19th century. The most famous paintings are: “Las Meninas” from Velásquez and “El Tres de Mayo” from Goya. Although the Prado is not just reduced to the principal works, in fact, here you can find works from Greco, Bosco, Rafael, Tiziano, Murillo, Botticelli, Zurbarán and Veronés. Within the museums of the city, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum stands out for more than 800 paintings, sculptures and tapestries that cover the primitive flamencos to the avant-garde movement. You cannot miss the Reina Sofia Museum, dedicated to Spanish contemporary art, including Picasso’s Guernica and works from Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, Juan Gris and more. You will enjoy the sun of Madrid while meandering through the streets of the capital and contemplating her sumptuous monuments. Without a doubt, the most emblematic is the Plaza Mayor, which was finished in 1619, and is very lively during Christmas and the summer when people occupy the terraces. Close by, is the well-known “aristocratic centre” where the astonishing Royal Palace is located, which is the residence of the Spanish Royal Family. Next to the Palace, you may visit the Almudena Cathedral, where the Price of Asturias and Princes Leticia were married in 2004. The Puerta de Sol and the Paseo de los Artes complete this group of monuments, which also includes the Cibeles and Neptuno Fountains and the impressive building of the Bank of Spain. In the historic centre you can walk down Gran Via, the most important avenue of the urban centre. Here you will find cinemas, theatres, hotels, as well as stores such as Corte Inglés. Madrid’s nightlife represents one of the most important attractions of the city. You can also relax in the Retiro Park. After unwinding and enjoying delicious “tapas,” you are ready to experience Madrid’s nightlife. The liveliest neighbourhoods for going out are Malasaña, where the action was born in the 80´s, and Chueca, the gay neighbourhood of Madrid. Or perhaps you would prefer to see a Real Madrid game in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium…. On Sunday mornings you can visit the Rastro, the famous street market of the city. More that 1000 stands await you: don’t leave Madrid without a souvenir!
