The Arc de Triomf stands as a symbol of the first Expo that took place in Barcelona in 1888 and as the entrance from the North West to the Sant Pere and Born districts (known together as La Ribera), the part of the old centre of Barcelona. In the 13th century, a century of splendour for maritime trading, the majority of the town's trade was concentrated here along with the palaces of the rich merchants. These days this area is best known for its long streets, filled with small shops, bars and restaurants. It is an amazing location for going out and to discover Barcelona. The area allows to see many sightseeing spots in short time. The best is to get off at the stations Arc de Triomf, Urquinaona or Jaume I. Plaza Catalunya and the gothic quarter with its cathedral, also named as “Barrio Gótico”, are only 5 minutes walking distance away. The beach is 15 minutes away or only one stop by metro. Before you start your discovery tour, you may have a walk in the park of Ciutadella, which was built by the borbones after the Spanish victory of the war in 1714.
