Location Description
Grà cia, once an independent village, has become a suburb of Barcelona and is a large jumble of very narrow streets and squares. Grà cia adjacent to one of the main streets of Barcelona, Passeig de Grà cia. Nowadays the Grà cia district is very culturally mixed. There are living Catalan families, foreign students, artists, gypsies, Arabs and many more.
It is the smallest district of Barcelona, with a length of 4.19 km ² but the second most populated (28,660 inhabitants per square meter), with a population of 120,087 people.
Grà cia is distinguished by hosting cultural centers of alternative and avant-garde character. The Teatre Lliure, where also a cinema is located, is an example of that.
The Carrer Gran de Grà cia is the main commercial street of this district where you will find a wide range of shops. Beside the Carrer Gran de Grà cia are also many small streets with bookstores, art galleries, little art shops etc. These streets are really attractive for spending time strolling around and have a nice cup of tea in one of the little cafés.
Parc Güell is undoubtedly the most famous landmark in Grà cia. Parc Güell is, after the Sagrada Familia, one of the most famous projects from the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. The Gaudi museum can also be found at the main entrance of Parc Güell. Other nice places to visit are the beautiful squares in Grà cia, the most popular ones are Plaça del Sol, Plaça de Rius i Taulet and Plaça de la Virreina.
Grà cia is a nice and popular district which also has an exciting nightlife. Not only the Carrer Verdi is full of life day and night, but also the many terraces and squares. If you are planning to go to Barcelona around the 15th of August you definitely should go to the Festival de Grà cia (Festa Major de Grà cia) which takes place every year. There is a "street decoration" contest, live music, restaurants on the streets, dancing, games for kids, and a lot of people.
To get in the center of Grà cia the best way is to take the subway. The stations Lesseps and Fontana are located in the center of Grà cia (both line 3).
