General Information
Location Description
The small city of Montepulciano is situated at an altitude of 605 meters above sea level and is located in the province of Sienna, with a population of approximately 13.000 inhabitants. The beautiful territory that surrounds the city enhances the charm of this old village: Montepulciano is in fact situated at a splendid height, at the crossing between the Val d’Orcia and the Val di Chiana. The history of the town hall has very ancient origins, but it was in the Middle Ages when Montepulciano, enriched by the works of the Renaissance architects, had its moment of maximum brilliance, and was named the “Pearl of the ‘500,” for the beauty of the civil and religious buildings. In today’s structure, one can observe all the phases of Montepulciano's history: in the splendid Piazza Grande the Duomo is emphasized, constructed at the beginning of the 17th century, and the palace of the town hall, with the tower and the facade added to the original Gothic palace, which has been made to look like a small version of the Palazzo Vecchio of Florence. In the surrounding area one may find other Renaissance palaces, such as Palazzo Tarugi and Palazzo Budelli, which make the city an elegant and charming place. In the valley below, in an unforgettable panorama, is the elegant mass of the Tempio di S. Biagio, a jewel of the Renaissance. Montepulciano is also famous for a production of wines of ideal quality, among which stands out the appreciable red Wine Nobile, one of the first Italian wines to obtain the recognition of the guaranteed denomination of origin.
