Location Description
The outskirts of Rome are home to a number of places of historical interest especially in the south of the capital. Several residential districts overlap in this part of the city with some more popular or business areas among them. A good example is the district of EUR.
The Appio Latino neighbourhood has conserved its full historical value since it includes most of the archaeological findings in this part of the city, particularly along its most important avenue, the Via Appia Antica; the connection between Rome and city of Brindisi, the main entrance and exit to the East.
A walk around this area provides an opportunity to visit the most important catacombs in Rome such as San Callisto, San Sebastiano and Santa Priscilla.
The construction of the ancient Via Appia began in the year 312 BC and was finished in the following century. Its plan had included a certain number of technical innovations to avoid its collapse in the case of extreme meteorological conditions. In the Parco dell’Appia Antica there are numerous archaeological sites of great historical interest both from the Roman and Medieval and Baroque eras such as the chapel of Domine Quo Vadis, the Cecilia Metella tomb and the Villa dei Quintili. It is interesting to note that this area has remained completely untouched by the building speculation that was so typical of modern Roman urban development.
In complete contrast to the historical areas of this part of the city is the modern district of EUR; constructed at the very beginning of the XX century for the Universal Exhibition that was never actually held because of the Second World War.
The area provides a number of characteristic features and examples of rationalist architecture with heavy-set, imposing buildings generally made of marble and travertine that are reminiscent of the great Roman temples. The complex was deliberately designed to create an analogy between the splendour of the Roman Empire and the period when Italy was governed by Benito Mussolini.
For those interested in increasing their cultural knowledge, a visit to several museums is fully recommended including the Museo della Civiltá Romana, the Museo dell’Alto Medioevo and the Museo Nazionale Preistorico Etnografico.
In the surrounding area is the district of Garbatella, a residential neighbourhood that was built in the first quarter of the XX century with buildings of limited height and small private villas. There are a good selection of different pizzerias and typical Italian restaurants nearby.
The south of the capital is very well connected by public transport including metro line B as well as a number of different bus services. From Eur it is also possible to easily access the motorway A91 that leads directly to Fiumicino airport.
