Location Description
This area is one of the most famous districts amongst the Roman locals for its night life. It is a relatively new neighborhood, dating back to the end of the 1800s, located in the shadow of the Aureliane walls, in what was once a mainly rural district.
The area became popular as it began to absorb the great exodus of rural folk leaving the countryside for the city in search of work. As a new area life was quite difficult and infrastructure didn’t actually arrive until 1909.
San Lorenzo became known as a "red district" because of its opposition to fascism, and in many basements clandestine newspapers and leaflets were printed declaring their opposition to the régime.
It was also of great importance during the student uprisings in 1978 as the area that is home to the University and attracting students and intellectuals from all over the country. Rome’s "La Sapienza" is one of Italy’s oldest universities and dates back to the beginning of the 1300. There are currently 21 faculties and 150 libraries.
During the Second World War the district was almost entirely destroyed by heavy bombing, but today it maintains a small-town atmosphere with numerous craft workshops, markets and little "trattorie" restaurants where visitors can taste typical Roman cuisine.
Its proximity to the university means that the area is frequented by large numbers of young people and students who fill out the numerous pubs, bars and pizzerias. It has also been home to a great number of artists, writers and intellectuals over the years including Pier Paolo Pasolini, who was an assiduous client of its many taverns.
San Lorenzo was born from the Basilica with the same name, built by the Emperor Costantino I in the IV century. The same square is home to the entrance of the Cimitero Verano that dates back to the Napoleonic era.
The area is located alongside the Rome’s most important station; the Termini, where two city metro lines connect as well as the majority of the capital’s buses.
