Location Description
Trastevere is one of Rome’s most characteristic areas. Extremely lively, full of charm and history, staying here is to enjoy the Eternal City at its very best.
A stroll around the labyrinth of its narrow little streets, almost unchanged over the centuries, gives the visitor an idea of real life in Rome, and it is also where the best pizzerias, typical Roman taverns and a huge selection of bars, workshops, designer shops, bookshops and art galleries can be discovered alongside numerous churches and monuments.
Plaza Trilussa is one of the most popular squares and the meeting place for many young people. The other square, Santa María in Trastevere, named after the famous church located there is an architectural gem dating back to the beginning of the medieval era, and is also the oldest Basilica in Rome. Also noteworthy are the Basílica de Santa Cecilia , S. Francesco a Ripa and Sant'Egidio. Another of the area’s beautiful buildings is the Villa Farnesina, home of the Italian science academy Accademia dei Lincei.
The district covers a wide area that encompasses Gianicolo, a great place to admire a fabulous view of the city. Here we can find Villa Sciarra and San Pietro en Montorio with the famous Tempietto del Bramante. The convent was given to Spain at the end of the XIX Century and is now the headquarters of the Real Academia Española.
A very central area, it is recommended to move around on foot as it is very well-communicated with buses and trams that have numerous stops on the district’s main central thoroughfare, the Viale Trastevere. A little further away towards the Circonvallazione Gianicolense, is the Estación Trastevere that is also the terminal for a number of different bus lines.
