Location Description
Colonna is one of the most central districts of Rome. Its name comes from the Column of Marcus Aurelius that can be found in the famous square of the same name, the Piazza Colonna.
The old district, the rione can be divided into various areas, the flatter near to the avenue Via del Corso and the hillier area around the Via Veneto and the ancient walls of Rome.
It is not a particularly large area but is home to a huge number of monuments and places of interest from the Roman era, in both Renaissance and Baroque styles, especially in the flatter area such as: the Tempio di Adriano (Temple of Adriano), in the Piazza di Pietra today the location of the Roman Stock Exchange, the Galleria Colonna, the gallery now known as the Galleria Alberto Sordi after the famous Italian actor, the Sant’Andrea delle Fratte church with the Borromini bell tower, and the Churches of San Lorenzo in Lucina (Saint Lawrence’s at Lucina), San Silvestro in Capite (Saint Sylvester at Capite) and Santa Maria in Aquiro (dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus at Aquiro).
The flatter area of Colonna is also well known for being the heart of the Italian Republic’s political activity: the Palazzo Monetecitorio houses the Camera de Diputados (Chamber of parliament) and the Palazzo Chigi is the location of the Italian Government’s Presidencia del Consejo de Ministros (Presidency of Ministers Council).
The main streets are the Via del Corso, Via del Tritone, Via Frattina, Via Veneto. This is the real centre of Rome, with a frenetic atmosphere during the day and continuous coming and going of vehicles, visitors, workers, executives and politicians.
However just a short distance away from the main thoroughfares and it is possible to take a quiet stroll back in time. Centuries of history merge together in what is a small area housing a number of churches from the Imperial and Medieval Ages, and impressive renaissance or baroque style buildings.
It is an ideal setting for those looking for a central location and who are happy to soak up the rhythm of a city in continuous movement. It is easy to move around on foot and enjoy the rest of the city. However there are other options; the nearest metro station is the Barberini Linea A, and the area is also served by a complete network of traditional buses running along the main streets, and small electronic buses within the district that venture deeper into the area and can travel along the narrower streets.
