Location Description
This area of Rome developed around the beginning of the 1930s and encompasses a mixture of residential and popular districts. It was originally created to provide accommodation to the working class that had settled in the east of the city during the economic boom. Its growth expanded irregularly around the edge of the Roman countryside (Agro Pontino), and therefore gathered groups of peasants, workers, unemployed civilians and all those the regime had moved out of the centre of the city to make way for the construction of the Fori Imperiali.
Its social structure perfectly reflected the sheer diversity of Italian economic development and the area also became famous for its resistance to fascism in the years of the Duce regime. Its development continued over time and a real milestone was established with the construction of the metro, and the Stazione Tiburtina (the second most important in Rome) providing direct connections with the rest of the city.
These areas really provide visitors the chance to experience a Rome that is not found in the tourist guides – the periphery of the city and its authenticity. Despite its distance from the centre there are also a number of places of tourist interest.
Another river, the Aniene crosses the east of Rome. In the past the river was used by the Romans for the transport of merchandise, and there was actually a river port located close to the spot which today displays the remains of the II century Villa Romana di Ripa Mammea. There are also a number of Roman tombs located in various locations (Via Tiburtina), an ancient volcanic mine on the Banks of the River Aniene (Adriane era), ruins of Roman Villas and the remains of houses from this period.
The area surrounding the River Aniene has an ample selection of places of cultural and historical interest such as the natural reserve, the Riserva natuale della Valle dell’Aniene, a protected area that stretches over 350 hectares. Likewise the Museo di Casal de’ Pazzi is home to part of a Pleistocene deposit that dates back over 200,000 years and includes the ancient river channel where remains and bones were deposited by its flow. Along the Via Casilina there are numerous historical buildings from the Decline of the Roman Empire that include the Catacombe di Marcellino e Pietro and the Mausoleo di Elena, one of the most important architectonic complexes of Paleo-christian Rome from the IV century.
A walk towards the south leads to the famous film studios the Cinecitta that have hosted some of the most famous faces in Italian and foreign cinema. The area is also popular for its shops and busy commercial district and attracts many Romans for its shopping possibilities.
The east of Rome is also home to a number of parks and one particularly worthy of mention is the Villa Gordiani, an archeological park that includes the ruins of an ancient patrician villa, named after the family that gave Rome three emperors.
The area is served by different forms of public transport including two metro lines (A and B) and several bus services that connect with the rest of the city. There are also frequent train services from the Stazione Tiburtina to Fiumicino Airport.
