In a picturesque almost surreal position on a stone ridge overhanging the "Val di Lente" valley, Pitigliano has a very long history stretching from prehistoric times through Etruscan and Roman times to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The Hebrew ghetto also known as "Piccola Gerusalemme" is of special importance. The grottos and caves have served as a cellar for centuries, also as a store for the famous "Bianco di Pitigliano".
