Location Description
San Gimignano is a Tuscan town of seven thousand inhabitants situated in the province of Siena. It is located at the top of a typical Tuscan hill and is recognizable from a distance of several kilometres thanks to its characteristic towers, which stand out in the profile of the neighbourhood. To enter San Gimignano is like travelling in time; the characteristic medieval architecture, the labyrinth of small streets, the stone buildings and panoramic views of Siena's fields are simply a spectacle for the eyes and heart of any visitor. During the Middle Ages the people of San Gimignano had an epoch of great development due to the trade of high-quality agricultural products from the Tuscan hills. The pride of the wealthy families was the foundation for the construction of 72 towers in the town hall, each competing in height to earn the most prestige (today 15 remain). Furthermore, many of the most valuble works of art from the era were rescued from the churches and lounges of the most important families. This period of wealth was interrupted in 1348 by the epidemic that shook all of Europe and damaged all the activities and trades, condemning the village to a period of poverty and anonymity. After the year 1800, the beauty and distinctiveness of San Gimignano were, thankfully, rediscovered and the town preserves its medieval buildings intact. San Gimignano became a holiday destination, and UNESCO declared the town a patrimony of humanity in 1990, subsequently increasing its world reputation. Among the most important places to visit are the Palazzo Comunale, which holds the civic museum and the art gallery with masterpieces of Italian art; Dante's room with the Maestá, the Tower of Podestá from 1311; the Chiesa di Sant'Agostino; the Cappella di Saint Bartolo; and the Museum of Tortures, which preserves and demonstrates the skills and instruments of medieval torture. A stay in San Gimignano is an ideal occasion to savour the culinary specialities of the Tuscan tradition, such as delicious meats and renowned wines produced from the grapevines of the surrounding hills. The town is full of inns, taverns and pizzerias with a friendly climate making a cosy and unforgettable experience.
