Location Description
This area extends along the entire south bank of the River Thames to Croydon and adjoins the municipal of Sutton. It is quite a difficult part of the city to define with a mixture of residential and more popular areas, but all provide fabulous transport connections to the rest of the city.
The north of the area is separated by the River Thames and offers some beautiful scenery particularly at night fall.
The south of London also has numerous parks, almost every area with its individual green space. One of the most famous districts is Wimbledon which each year hosts one of the oldest and most famous competitive sports events in the world; a Mecca for tennis lovers who travel from far and wide each year to watch the Wimbledon tennis Championship.
Not far from the sports facilities is the beautiful park Wimbledon Common where it is possible to enjoy a wonderful stroll and visit the Wimbledon Windmill – the ancient windmill restored and transformed into a museum – or the Temple of Buddhapadipa, the very first Budhist Temple in the United Kingdom.
Travelling a little closer to the city centre leads to the Royal National Theatre that is located close to the lively areas of Elephant & Castle and Brixton. Both neighbourhoods are very popular at night among the younger population with a great variety of venues. Brixton is considered the unofficial capital of the African and Caribbean community in London since it is home to an important representative population.
In the area of Forest Hill visitors can travel to the beautiful Horniman Museum with its wonderful glass structure and a great natural history and anthropological collection. It also organizes numerous activities for children such as storytelling and handicraft workshops.
In the far south of the area is Croydon – a former village that was eventually encompassed by the city as it began to grow. The area is for many the heart of London culture thanks to the Warehouse Theatre (known for offering support to young writers) or Fairfield Halls, an art centre that houses a concert hall, theatre and art gallery.
