Location Description
Sanxenxo is a Galician coastal city, in the North-East of the Iberian Peninsula. It benefits from one of the best climates in the area.
No one denies Sanxenxo the title as capital of tourism in the Southern coast of Galicia. Practically connected to Portonovo, both localities seduce numerous vacationers every year.
Long ago, Sanxenxo was just a small fishermen's village. Nowadays, the constant come and go of tourists has transformed its physiognomy. The A Lanzada Beach, which is 4km long, is one of the most visited beaches of Galicia. Probably because former legends award its waters the virtue of influencing fertility.
Sanxenxo's port is predominately for travellers, offering possibilities of anchor drop especially for high riding ships. It is also used by small fishing crafts that work inside the estuary.
The neighbouring city of Portonovo also possesses an attractive maritime nucleus. The typical character of its port has converted it into one of the most charming corners of the Southern coast of Galicia.
If one walks along Sanxenxo's surroundings, they may discover the Southern coast of Galicia, filled with fertile valleys that have been invaded by the sea. There are four estuaries: that of Muros y Noia (the smallest), the estuary of Arousa, the estuary of Pontevedra (where Sanxenxo is located), and surrounded by beaches is the Estuary of Vigo, where the Cíes Islands are located and have been declared a National Park. To get a full view of the four estuaries, one must go up to the Cirota Viewpoint, with a height of 498m.
From Sansenxo, it is only 80km to Santiago de Compostela. It would be a pity not to visit the splendid cathedral here, which is the third most important pilgrimage sight in the world, after Jerusalem and Rome. Its ancient streets continue heartening visitors, and many enjoy the numerous and charming bars and taverns in the city.
